As 2014 drew closer to its terminal evening, the ThrdCoast staff convened and posed a simple question: isn't everybody sick to death of year-end lists? For Mangum's sake, most of them are starting to encroach upon the Autumn holidays worse than Wal-Mart Christmas ads.
After much debate, a surprisingly bloody internal power struggle, and several gallons of cheap bourbon, it was concluded that we'd put one together under the following conditions.
1) No numbering. The concept of a ranking system offended the metaethical subjectivists in our, well, ranks, and generally does little more than relegate those at the bottom to page-six obscurity. Plus, how can you compare The War on Drugs to Tei Shi with any sort of non-arbitrary rubric?
2) We're running it several days after the New Year. December, November, and even October are inundated with best-of lists these days, and we figured you'd all be burnt out on Ariel Pink and Caribou after about a week.
Here's your alternative to the alternative, twenty artists who did nothing more than get our collective goats this year. We think they'll get yours, too.
